Pacquiao vs. Mayweather Analysis

Introduction
2009 is a great year for boxing. Earlier in the year, Pacquiao had an amazing performance against Hatton, defeating him in 2 rounds. Mayweather announced his coming back from retirement and out boxed one of the best pound for pound fighters in the sport, Juan Manuel Marquez. This increased Mayweather’s unbeaten record to 40-0. Several days ago, Pacquiao convincingly defeated the former Welterweight World Champion, Miguel Cotto in 11 rounds. Many critics and fan argue who is truly the best pound for pound fighter in boxing, and we may see this fight of a lifetime materializing in 2010.

As a boxing fan for 6 years and counting, I will break down each boxer’s strengths and weaknesses as objectively as possible watching from their fights.

Speed
Strength is comprised of 2 major factors: speed and weight. Pacquiao is naturally the shorter and lighter than Mayweather, therefore he has more speed. Please note however, that Mayweather is extremely fast and should not be overlooked. Winner: Pacquiao

Weight
The other factor in determining strength is weight. Mayweather is naturally taller and heavier than Pacquiao, therefore he has more weight. Please note that both Pacquiao and Mayweather will be pretty close in weight, however. Winner: Mayweather

Defense
Mayweather’s uncanny and masterful ability to duck and avoid power punches serves him well. However, Pacquiao is a different type of defensive player, one who can take power hits head on, or as they say he has a good chin. Winner: Mayweather

Accuracy
A major factor in determining who has a better offense, besides weight and speed, is accuracy. Strength and speed mean nothing if you are not hitting your target. A reason why Pacquiao’s gets so many KO’s is because he lands his punches in accurately convincing manner. He’ll have his hands full however, as Mayweather is the best defensive boxer and is an extremely accurate counter puncher. Either fighter is a perfect match for each other. Winner: Pacquiao
